How Much Is Dangerous
Concentrated oil is the primary concern for both ingestion and direct dermal exposure.
Symptoms
- Drooling and vomiting
- Lethargy and weakness
- Incoordination
- Low body temperature
- Low blood pressure in significant exposures
- Skin irritation or redness with direct dermal contact, and in significant exposures, liver enzyme elevation detectable on bloodwork
Time to Symptoms
Usually within a few hours of exposure.

- Bathe any skin exposure promptly with mild soap and lukewarm water
- Contact a veterinarian for ingestion or any significant exposure
What Not To Do
- Do not use ylang ylang oil topically on cats, or in diffusers in spaces they cannot freely leave
Veterinary Treatment
Supportive care and decontamination as appropriate, following the general approach used throughout this essential oils category. Most cases with prompt, appropriate supportive care resolve within 24-48 hours without lasting effects; the exception is significant, concentrated exposure where liver monitoring may need to continue for several days afterward.
Toxic Compound
A complex mixture of aromatic compounds poorly tolerated by cats given their characteristic glucuronyl transferase deficiency, consistent with the pattern seen across this entire essential oils category. Products containing this oil range from pure essential oil (highest risk) to heavily diluted perfumes, candles, and skincare items (generally lower risk from incidental contact), and assessing which category a given household product falls into is a genuinely useful first step when evaluating any specific exposure.
